"Write a letter to your younger self during a key moment in your life addressing one or more of the following: words of encouragement, lessons you have learned and/or challenges you have overcome."

Dear Cade, Moving away from home and beginning college will be the most challenging time you’ve ever experienced, but you have what it takes to succeed! I know you’re filled with anxiety about your future as an engineering student, but don’t let those doubts consume you. You’ve got this! Your determination and hard work will lead to new friendships and incredible opportunities. My advice to you is to believe in yourself, work hard, and take this opportunity to be a light to those around you. First, I want to share a few words of encouragement. It’s no secret that cystic fibrosis provides a unique set of challenges. Continue to make your health a priority even though it will be difficult at times. Create a schedule that works for you and stick to it. There’s plenty of time to care for yourself, study, and have an amazing social life. You just need to plan for it. You have many, many fun experiences ahead of you, but unfortunately, you’ll also have to overcome a few illnesses. Stay strong and do not be discouraged. Your family and friends will support you in tremendous ways and you will persevere and become stronger as you conquer your challenges. You are a warrior as your name implies, and don’t ever forget that. Next, you have many professors and classes in front of you that will demand your very best. Don’t let your fears stop you from facing them head-on and sticking with your plan. You can do difficult things, and with discipline and hard work, you will survive your demanding classes. Once you complete the first two years, you’ll love working on fun, hands-on engineering projects of your own and finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s worth it; I promise. Last, I’d like to share with you a few lessons I’ve learned along the way. There will be more studying than you could ever imagine. In those late nights of brain overload, please remember your dedication will pay off in the end. Find a group of responsible, loyal friends right away with the same major and form a tight bond. Study with them and grow those friendships. You will learn from one another and develop unified resilience during times of adversity. Finding new friendships will be important as you spend less time with your family. Moving away may separate you physically from your family, but you will still spend time together. You’ll miss them, of course, but don’t worry! You’ll be fine and will even end up enjoying your independence. Communicate with them often about your life, and don’t handle stresses on your own. Most importantly, always believe in yourself and take opportunities each day to encourage others and brighten their lives. Your attitude and positive outlook impact the world more than you will ever know. I’m proud of you, Cade. Stay encouraged, and always be the light to those around you! With love, Cade (your future self)
